Mistakes To Avoid When Packing Fragile Items In Preparation For Moving Day

Even if you are only moving across town, you still have an immense amount of packing to do. However, while you are caught up in the whirlwind of getting ready for moving day, make sure you do not make the following mistakes while packing your fragile items.

Placing Breakables Together Without Padding

Since you are not moving to a new home that is far away, you may think that you can just carefully place your glasses, plates, curios, and other breakable items in a box without any extra steps. After all, they will not have to endure many miles of vibrations and movement from the truck, right?

However, even the motion of lifting a box full of unprotected breakables could result in damage. As they are carried, even when gingerly treated, there is still a chance that some items will be chipped, cracked, or broken.

Before you place fragile items in a box, wrap them with bubble wrap, newspaper, or even your socks and dish towels. Any type of padding will absorb the stress from being moved, helping to decrease the chance of damaging your breakables.

Leaving Empty Space in the Boxes

Another mistake that you should avoid while packing and placing breakable items is leaving any empty spaces around them in the boxes. Even if you have taken great care to wrap your things, any open space will make the move around, increasing their risk of being damaged.

However, you also do not want to fill this space with items that are not breakable or that are heavy, as these could move around and crash into your dishes or nick-knacks. Instead, fill this area with packing materials such as foam peanuts.

Or, you could also take advantage of this extra space to pack softer items. Pack your towels, underwear, and lighter shirts around the breakables. You could also place thin blankets on the bottom and top of the box.

Not only would you be saving room in other boxes for these softer items, but they can provide extra padding and support for your breakables. This can also help save you money spent on packing materials.

Avoiding the above mistakes while packing up your fragile possessions can help ensure they arrive at your new home undamaged. If you need further advice on how to pack up your breakables or other items, contact your moving services company before your moving date.
